One of the first big questions many newly engaged couples ask is, “When should we book our wedding photographer?” It’s such a simple question, but the timing truly matters, especially here in Georgia.
If you are planning a wedding in Cumming, Lake Lanier, or anywhere in North Georgia, the short answer is this: once your venue is secured, your photographer should be next.
But let’s talk through why.
Georgia has some of the most beautiful wedding seasons in the South, and couples know it. Spring brings blooming trees, soft greenery, and comfortable temperatures. Fall delivers golden leaves, warm sunsets, and crisp evenings that make outdoor ceremonies feel magical. Literally A DREAM!!
Because of this, spring and fall dates tend to book the fastest, often 9 to 12 months in advance. In especially popular months like April, May, September, and October, many photographers are fully booked a year out. Around April-October is busy season for weddings so spots fill up quickly!
If your heart is set on a specific date during peak season, it’s wise to secure your wedding photographer as soon as your venue contract is signed! That way you know you for sure have a venue for your date and can see if your photographer you are wanting to book, is available too!
Your wedding photographer is one of the only vendors who will be present for nearly your entire day. From getting ready in the morning to your final send-off at night, your photographer is there to preserve every meaningful moment.
Booking early does more than just reserve your date. It gives you time to build trust and connection. It allows you to schedule engagement photos without feeling rushed. It provides space for timeline planning, lighting conversations, and intentional preparation. I love to prepare my bride and groom with intention, down to the little details!
When you book your photographer early, your wedding planning becomes calmer and more organized. Instead of scrambling months before your date, you can move forward confidently knowing one of the most important parts of your day is secured.
Summer weddings in Georgia can be stunning, especially near Lake Lanier or in the North Georgia mountains. However, the heat and humidity often influence ceremony timing and venue choices. While summer dates may not book quite as quickly as peak fall weekends, professional photographers still limit the number of weddings they take each year to ensure each couple receives thoughtful attention.
Winter weddings, though less common, offer their own quiet beauty! If you are planning a winter celebration, availability may be slightly more flexible, but it is still best to inquire as early as possible.
The key takeaway is this: availability depends not only on the season, but on how many weddings your photographer chooses to accept annually.
If you are engaged and planning a wedding in Cumming or North Georgia, here is a simple guide:
12+ months before the wedding: Secure your venue and begin inquiring with photographers.
9–12 months before: Book your wedding photographer and schedule engagement photos. (even sooner if you can after your venue!!!)
6–8 months before: Begin building your wedding day timeline with your photographer’s guidance.
This timeline creates space for intentional planning rather than rushed decisions. But, if you get engaged and are getting married sooner than these timelines, whichever timeline you have, is still perfect! Some of my brides plan their wedding in advance but some want to get married and be a wife sooner, each one is perfect and has their own kind of story, for you!
As a wedding photographer serving Cumming, Georgia and the surrounding North Georgia area on select dates, I intentionally limit the number of weddings I accept each year so I can serve each couple fully.
Long after the flowers fade and the cake is gone, your images are what remain. They become the way you remember the way your dad looked at you before walking you down the aisle. They preserve the emotion in your vows. They hold the beginning of your marriage for decades to come.
Because of that, photography should never be an afterthought. Booking early ensures you are not simply choosing from whoever happens to be available, you are choosing someone whose work, values, and presence align with your vision.
If you are newly engaged and wondering whether your date is available, it is never too early to reach out and begin the conversation! I am more than willing to chat!
