Outfit Suggestions & Tips for Family Photos

Not only am I passionate about capturing and curating gorgeous, authentic, natural, and timeless images to tangibly keep memories forever, but I seek to connect with my clients and build relationships. My desire is to tell your story, and have you leaving each session feeling beautiful, loved, and empowered. Outfit Suggestions & Tips for Family Photos are important, so I wanted to include some suggestions & tips below!

It’s an honor to record beautiful moments and create treasured memories for families as they begin new and exciting chapters of their lives.

When I started my photography business, I never imagined I’d also be helping clients as a personal wardrobe consultant! As someone who enjoys wearing comfortable clothes like jeans and flip-flops, I never thought I’d offer wardrobe advice for photo sessions. However, I quickly learned that clients—whether it’s families, seniors, or kids—often need help choosing outfits that look great in photos. Amanda Jenkins Photography is here to help with whatever you need and have questions with!

What you wear to a photoshoot is crucial! By offering advice on what works and what doesn’t, I can ensure your photo session goes smoothly and results in beautiful, timeless photos. Below, I’ll include some examples of outfits! If you book with me as well, I’ll send over a guide that has examples and I can help you choose your coordinating outfits!!! Check out my pinterest board inspiration for more ideas!

1. Coordinate Colors, But Skip the Matching Outfits

Avoid “matchy-matchy” outfits, like everyone wearing white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim to coordinate 2-4 colors that complement each other. Stick with a color palette that works well together, such as earth tones or neutrals. For a more flattering look, women should consider wearing medium to long dresses, as they capture movement beautifully. Just remember to avoid short dresses if you plan on taking seated photos.

2. Opt for Seasonal Color Combinations

Each season has its own set of trending colors. Check out Pantone’s color forecasts for the year or Pinterest to find seasonal color combinations that coordinate well. By staying current with the season’s colors, you can create a cohesive look for your family photos.

3. Start with a Favorite Clothing Item

Start by selecting a favorite item of clothing. Whether it’s a solid color or a patterned piece (like plaid or argyle), this can serve as the foundation for your family’s outfits. These patterns often feature multiple colors, which can help you build a cohesive look.

4. Build Around That Favorite Piece

Once you’ve picked your starting piece, find other clothes that complement it. You likely already own items that will work perfectly with your chosen clothing. If needed, fill in the gaps with new pieces that align with the same color scheme.

5. Fill in the Missing Pieces

After organizing your wardrobe, check for any gaps in the outfit combinations. Lay everything out on your bed to get a clear view. If you need extra items, stores like Old Navy offer affordable options for the entire family, making it easy to complete your look.

6. Accessorize to Enhance Your Look

Accessories are a great way to elevate your family photos! I recommend shopping at stores like Charming Charlie’s for reasonably priced jewelry, headbands, scarves, and more. Accessories can create visual interest and movement in your photos, making the final image more dynamic.

7. Choose Shoes That Fit the Look

Shoes matter more than you might think! Avoid shoes that are worn-out or outdated. If your shoes need a little TLC, clean them up before the shoot. Make sure your shoes complement your outfit and are comfortable enough to move in. If you wear heels, bring a pair of comfy shoes for walking in between shots.

Do’s and Don’ts for the Perfect Family Photoshoot

Do’s:

  • Apply a fresh coat of nail polish or go without it for a clean, polished look.
  • Even if you don’t wear makeup often, consider using a tinted moisturizer and mascara to brighten your face.
  • Ensure everyone’s hair is styled, and if necessary, get a haircut a week before the session.
  • Bring along makeup for touch-ups and hairspray for last-minute fixes.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid bright-colored bras or visible straps. Nude or strapless bras work best for photo sessions.
  • Skip clothing with logos, characters, or overly bold designs.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to pick your outfits. Planning ahead ensures you’ll feel confident and prepared.

Additional Tips for Your Photoshoot

  • Iron Your Clothes: Wrinkles can distract from the overall look of your photo. Iron or steam your clothes ahead of time and make sure they stay neat during transit.
  • Hair and Accessories: If you plan a new haircut, schedule it two weeks in advance. Bring along hair accessories to handle any weather-related issues during outdoor shoots.
  • Makeup: Go for a natural makeup look. Avoid shiny foundations, and remember that subtle makeup enhances your facial features.
  • Moisturize: Hydrate your skin leading up to the shoot for the best possible glow.
  • Brighten Your Smile: Start teeth whitening treatments at least two weeks before the session.
  • Manage Bloating: Avoid high-salt and fatty foods to feel your best during the shoot.
  • Nail Care: Keep your nails tidy and painted in a neutral tone to keep the focus on the family rather than your nails.
  • Undergarments: Ensure your undergarments match your outfit and remain hidden.
  • Sunburns: Avoid sunburns by tanning well in advance, and remember to account for any tan lines.

Choose the Right Location

Location plays a key role in the success of your photos. Whether it’s an outdoor park or a cozy indoor space, make sure the location suits the vibe you’re going for. Consider the weather and natural lighting to ensure your photos look beautiful. I can help you decide the mood you want for your photos! If you want the glow, sunrise or sunset might be the best option!

Communicate with Your Photographer

Don’t forget to discuss your ideas with your photographer. Whether it’s specific poses or locations you want to try, communication ensures your vision is brought to life. I am here to capture all of the emotions, candid moments, and all details pertaining to your family! As an Eastern Idaho & Northern Georgia photographer, I am here for you!

No Stress—Just Have Fun!

Once you’ve prepared, relax and enjoy the process. Your photographer will guide you through the session, ensuring everyone looks amazing. Your photos will turn out beautifully, and you’ll have fun doing it! I am in love with natural and movement posing, which will relax you and we will capture those candid moments!

I hope this helped and is something you can look back on when you are thinking of planning your family photos, outfits, and bringing personalized items!

xoxo,

Amanda Jenkins Photography
