If you’re wondering when the best time is to take family photos in Georgia, you are not alone. It’s one of the questions I get asked the most as a Cumming Georgia Family Photographer, and the answer truly depends on the feeling you want your photos to have. Georgia is beautiful year-round, but each season brings a different kind of light, color, and emotion.
Spring in North Georgia feels fresh and full of life. By late March and April, everything begins blooming, and May brings that full, soft greenery that photographs beautifully. Spring sessions feel light, romantic, and joyful. If you love florals, soft colors, and that “new beginnings” energy, this is such a sweet time for family portraits.
Georgia weather can be slightly unpredictable in early spring, so flexibility is important. I always build in grace for reschedules when needed because the light after a spring rain can be absolutely stunning.
Summer in Cumming brings full greenery and long golden evenings. The sun sets later, which gives us that dreamy golden hour light around 7:30–8:30pm. Summer sessions feel warm and playful, especially in open fields or near water.
It can be hot, so breathable fabrics and lighter tones photograph best. If your family thrives in that barefoot, sunshine-filled energy, summer can feel natural and relaxed.
Fall is the most popular season for family photos in Georgia, and for good reason. October and early November bring rich, warm tones that create a cozy, nostalgic feel. The leaves begin changing in the mountains first and slowly move south toward Cumming and surrounding areas. Knowing the fall foliage timing for Georgia is important!
Because this is peak season for any Cumming Georgia Family Photographer, I always recommend booking early. Fall calendars fill quickly, especially for weekend dates.
Winter is often overlooked, but it can be incredibly timeless. In Cumming, we don’t typically get heavy snow, which means we still have open fields, evergreens, and neutral backdrops available.
Winter sessions feel minimal and classic. If you’re wanting something clean and simple without competing colors in the background, winter light can be beautiful and flattering.
Beyond season, timing during the day matters just as much. I almost always schedule sessions around golden hour, the hour before sunset, and taking photos about an hour and a half before. This light is soft, flattering, and creates natural skin tones with that warm glow so many families love.
Midday sun can feel harsh and create shadows under the eyes, so unless we’re shooting in open shade, sunset sessions are typically ideal.
The most important thing I tell families is this: don’t wait for the “perfect” season! The best time to take family photos is when this chapter of your life feels meaningful. Whether you have toddlers who are constantly changing, seniors about to graduate, or you simply haven’t updated portraits in years, that is reason enough.
As a Cumming Georgia Family Photographer, my heart is to create images that feel connected, natural, and legacy-focused, no matter the season. Georgia gives us beautiful backdrops year-round. There truly isn’t a wrong time to preserve your family’s story!
If you’re thinking about scheduling family photos in Cumming or anywhere in North Georgia, I would love to help you choose the season and setting that feels most like your family!
