How to Prepare Kids for Family Photos | Cumming Georgia Family Photographer

Mother holding baby in Cumming Georgia field

As a Cumming Georgia Family Photographer, one of the biggest questions I get from parents is:

“How do I make sure my kids behave during photos?”

The truth?
They don’t have to behave perfectly! I am trained and have tons of experience with kiddos so I can totally make them feel comfortable! I am here to help you, mom!

The most meaningful family photos aren’t about stiff smiles and folded hands, they’re about connection, movement, giggles, and the way your child wraps their arms around your neck without being asked.

But there are a few simple things you can do to set your session up for success.

Here’s exactly how to prepare your kids for family photos in Cumming, Georgia.

1. Talk About It Like It’s Something Fun

Kids follow your energy.

Instead of saying:

  • “We need you to be good.”

  • “Don’t mess up the pictures.”

  • “Smile nicely.”

Try:

  • “We’re going to play and take pictures together!”

  • “Miss Amanda is going to tell silly jokes.”

  • “We get to cuddle and run around!”

When children expect fun, they show up relaxed, and relaxed kids photograph beautifully!

2. Don’t Over-Prepare Them

As a Cumming Georgia Family Photographer, I promise you, I don’t expect perfection.

If you rehearse smiles or tell them exactly how to stand, they often freeze up. Instead, let them come as they are. I guide everything naturally during your session so you never have to stress about posing. You can read more about my family session experience here.

The magic happens in between the “posed” moments anyway!

3. Schedule Around Their Best Time of Day

This is huge.

If your toddler naps from 1–3pm, don’t skip it.
If your child melts down when hungry, bring snacks.
If they’re happiest right after dinner, let’s plan for that.

I am here for you and to serve your family, I am flexible!!

In Cumming, Georgia, I typically schedule sessions around golden hour (that dreamy sunset light!!! I LOVE it!!), but we can absolutely work around your child’s rhythm and schedule when needed!

4. Feed Them Beforehand (and Bring Backup Snacks)

Hungry kids = stressed parents.

Give them a balanced meal beforehand and pack:

  • Non-messy snacks (no chocolate or juices/candy since these stain easy 😅)

  • Water

  • A small comfort item if needed

Sometimes a quick snack break halfway through resets the entire mood.

5. Dress Them in Comfortable Clothing

Outfits matter, but comfort matters more.

Avoid:

  • Itchy fabrics

  • Tight waistbands

  • Brand new shoes they’ve never worn

When kids feel comfortable, they move naturally. And natural movement is what creates those timeless, legacy images you’ll treasure forever.

If you ever want outfit guidance, I’m always happy to help you coordinate everything so it feels cohesive and effortless.

6. Release the Pressure

This one is the most important.

Your children do not need to:

  • Sit still the entire time

  • Smile on command

  • Look at the camera every second

Some of my favorite images as a Cumming Georgia Family Photographer are:

  • Dad tossing a giggling toddler in the air

  • Mom brushing hair out of her daughter’s face

  • A child hiding behind mom’s leg

  • Siblings belly-laughing mid-run

Those are the images that feel like home! I am here to document the session as it is and with how your sweet family is as well!

7. Trust the Process

I’ve photographed so many families in Cumming and across North Georgia, and I promise, the sessions parents worry about the most often turn out the most beautiful.

Kids are meant to wiggle.
They’re meant to laugh.
They’re meant to be themselves.

And your photos should reflect that.

What Matters Most as a Cumming Georgia Family Photographer

Years from now, you won’t remember whether your child sat perfectly still.

You’ll remember:

  • The way their hand fit in yours

  • The way they leaned into you

  • The way they looked at you like you were their whole world

That’s what I’m there to capture.

If you’re looking for a Cumming Georgia Family Photographer who focuses on connection over perfection, I would be honored to serve your family.
