Why 8 Hours of Wedding Coverage Is My Favorite as a Dallas-Fort Worth Wedding Photographer

One of the most common questions I get as a Dallas–Fort Worth wedding photographer is: “How many hours of wedding photography do I really need?” And while every wedding is different and some may need more time, I’ll be honest…

Eight hours of coverage is my favorite.

Not because it’s the biggest package.
Not because it’s trendy.
But because it protects your story. I think 8 hours of wedding coverage is the best amount and is a sweet spot!

Whether you’re getting married in Texas or working with a Cumming Georgia wedding photographer, here’s why 8 hours of wedding photography coverage creates the most complete, stress-free experience.

1. It Covers the Most Important Parts of the Day

With 8 hours, we can typically capture:

  • Final getting ready moments

  • Detail photos

  • First looks (if you choose one or multiple)

  • Wedding party portraits

  • Family formals

  • Ceremony

  • Couple portraits

  • Reception entrances

  • Toasts

  • First dances

  • Open dancing

  • Exit or Controlled Exit with your people!

It allows your day to unfold naturally without constantly watching the clock. It’s my favorite!

And that changes everything.

2. It Creates a Relaxed Wedding Timeline

When couples book 6 hours, the timeline often feels tight and a little stressful. I NEVER want you to feel that way, and especially during the best day of your life!

When couples book 10–12 hours, there can be excess downtime. But that is completely fine, depending on the events going on and the timeline details!

But 8 hours? It’s the sweet spot.

It gives:

  • Flexibility

  • Buffer time

  • Breathing room

  • Space for genuine moments

As a wedding photographer serving Dallas–Fort Worth and Cumming, Georgia, I build timelines around 8-hour coverage most often because it balances structure with freedom. I have lots of wedding photography timeline tips on my social media and also the blog!

3. It Protects Your Story From Start to Finish

Weddings are not just ceremonies!

They’re:

  • The quiet nerves before walking down the aisle

  • The hug from your dad when he’s giving you away to your person

  • The laughter during toasts

  • The chaos and joy of the dance floor

Eight hours gives enough space to tell the full story, not just the highlights.

As a Dallas–Fort Worth wedding photographer, storytelling is the heart of what I do. And 8 hours allows your legacy to be documented completely.

4. It Reduces Stress on You

Here’s what happens when coverage is too short:

  • Hair runs late and portraits get cut shorter then we were planning on

  • Family formals feel rushed

  • Couple portraits shrink to 5 minutes while we’re trying to catch the glow for your sunset portraits

  • Reception moments get missed

Eight hours gives margin.

And margin = peace.

5. It Still Allows Add-Ons If Needed

If you’re planning:

  • A large cultural celebration

  • A grand exit

  • A late-night reception

  • A long travel gap between locations

You can always add extra time.

But 8 hours gives a beautiful baseline for most traditional wedding days.

What a Sample 8-Hour Wedding Day Timeline Looks Like

Here’s a common example:

1:00 PM – Photographer arrives
1:00–2:00 – Details + finishing touches
2:00–2:45 – Getting ready candids
3:00 – First look
3:15–4:15 – Wedding party + couple portraits
4:30 – Ceremony
5:00–5:30 – Family formals
6:00 – Reception begins
6:30 – Dinner
7:00 – Toasts
7:30 – First dances
8:30 – Open dancing coverage ends

This is just an example, but you can see how balanced it feels. I offer Civil and LDS Wedding Timelines. I have both timeline examples that you can build on my website based on different events you’ll be having, location, and also when your wedding starts!
